April is National Volunteer Month, and Tampa Electric would like to celebrate the “feel-good energy” its employees use to support the community – and to do the right thing for customers.
“Volunteering in the community is part of the fabric of Tampa Electric,” said Stephanie Smith, vice president of State and Regional Affairs for Tampa Electric. “We encourage employees to volunteer for causes they care about the most – and it’s made an impressive impact.”
In 2023, Tampa Electric employees spent more than 36,000 hours volunteering in the community, in support of many causes, including:
- American Heart Association – The company raised more than $329,000 and recruited more than 200 walkers to help save lives through heart-health initiatives and CPR awareness. Tampa Electric President and Chief Executive Officer Archie Collins served as chair of the Heart Walk, which raised a total of $2.8 million.
- Salvation Army’s Angel Tree campaign – Employees fulfilled holiday wish lists for a record 200 children in the community whose families were unable to afford presents in 2023.
- School Supply Drives – 2023 was the eighth and most successful year participating in Backpacks of Hope for Patricia J. Sullivan Metropolitan Ministries Partnership School, which helps homeless children be successful. TECO employees provided critically needed school supplies and backpacks to 100 students and teachers. Employees also donated school supplies to Hillsborough Education Foundation’s Tampa Bay School Drive in 2023.
- Habitat for Humanity – For nearly eight years, TECO team members have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and physically constructed six new homes for local single moms through Women Build - a Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County program.
- Run for the Manatees – For the past three years, Tampa Electric has hosted an annual 5K race to raise money for manatee conservation efforts. In 2023, there was a record-breaking turnout, with more than 400 participants and 40 volunteers supporting the Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida‘s manatee education, research and rehabilitation.
