At Tampa Electric, our responsibility to West Central Florida goes far beyond providing reliable electricity. We live and work in the communities we serve. Our customers are our neighbors, friends and family. And our environment is shared not only today, but with future generations. That’s why we’re committed to building a brighter future – both through our business operations and our involvement in supporting local organizations.
Investing in People and Communities
Tampa Electric team members volunteer at Feeding Tampa Bay.
To help create a meaningful impact, we invest millions of shareholder dollars and volunteer thousands of hours each year to support local causes. For us, giving back isn’t just a corporate responsibility; it’s a core value.
Our partnerships with organizations like Feeding Tampa Bay, Plant City Food Bank, and Metropolitan Ministries are just one example of how we help those in need. Together, we’ve provided tens of thousands of meals to families facing food insecurity. These efforts go beyond temporary relief; they help create pathways for struggling children, adults and families to thrive. When communities are supported, everyone benefits.
Empowering the Workforce of Tomorrow
Lineworker trainees learn essential safety and balance skills as they climb poles in the training yard at HCC’s Brandon Campus.
Another rewarding way we contribute to the community is workforce development. By partnering with educational institutions and organizations, we create opportunities for individuals to build meaningful careers. A standout example of this is our Electrical Lineworker Training Program, which we developed in partnership with Hillsborough Community College.
We offer scholarships, training, and essential equipment to help students gain the skills necessary for a successful career in the energy industry. There’s a growing demand for skilled lineworkers, and this initiative opens doors for individuals to access well-paying jobs, providing them with financial stability while also helping to meet the energy needs of our growing region.
We also proudly support organizations like 3DE, Junior Achievement, Prospera, and Workforce Development Partners. These groups play a critical role in preparing students for the next stage of life, whether that’s college, vocational training, or entering the workforce. For example, Workforce Development Partners uplifts thousands of students annually by providing access to specialized curriculum, business tours, guest speakers from corporate partners and hiring fairs. These programs equip students with the knowledge, tools and inspiration they need to succeed in their careers and beyond.
Protecting Florida’s Ecosystem for Future Generations
Students set out to explore a mangrove ecosystem through the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center on Tampa Electric’s 500-acre Florida Conservation and Technology Center campus.
Our commitment to safeguarding the environment is multi-faceted. From operational best practices to innovative conservation initiatives, we continually work to preserve Florida’s unique ecosystems for future generations.
For example, at our Polk Power Station, we operate a reclaimed water treatment system that diverts reclaimed water from entering local waterways where it could harm marine life. We beneficially reuse it in the process of generating electricity before purifying it and returning it to the environment.
Our Manatee Viewing Center, a wildly popular destination for tourists and locals, helps raise awareness about manatee conservation and offers the chance to witness the incredible creatures up close as they relax in warm waters. The canal at our Big Bend Power station is a state- and federally designated manatee sanctuary that provides the gentle giants critical protection during the cold winter months. Many partners who rescue and rehabilitate manatees work with us to release them at our facility.
We also proudly support the Guy Harvey Foundation, which engages local teachers and students in hands-on science and conservation experiences at our Florida Conservation and Technology Center in Apollo Beach. The 500-acre campus is a place where students can explore Florida’s natural wonders, igniting a passion for environmental stewardship and conservation that will benefit our state’s ecosystems for generations to come.
