They rise at the break of dawn (sometimes sooner).
They pull on long-sleeved fire-retardant shirts and pants, and steel-toed boots that weigh four pounds each. Thick rubber gloves that are awkward as anything but necessary because they’re 20,000 kVA rated. They add a protector pair of gloves over those, a hard hat and wrap-around safety glasses.
All this even when it’s raining. Even when it’s 91 degrees and 78 percent humidity (sometimes hotter).
They face challenges every day.
And they get back up and do it all over again the next day.
More than 90 lineworkers keep the power on for the 830,000 customers of Tampa Electric.
The work they do makes us proud. Their safety record makes us prouder. And when disaster hits, at home or in another area of the country, they may have to spend weeks away from their loved ones, restoring power to grateful communities.
April 18 is National Lineworker Appreciation Day. At Tampa Electric, we like to celebrate our lineworkers all month.
